These pests do best in warm, humid conditions and the weather here means termite infestations are quite common. Termites
Termites evolved from wood-feeding cockroaches, and form a sister group with the cockroach genus Cryptocercus.
Spiders
Australia has over 2,400 species of spider. Less than 50 of them are harmful to humans. Spiders were among the first animals to live on land, an estimated 400 million years ago.
Ants
There are 1,275 Australian ant species described, but this could double with further research. Most species of Australian ants are found only in Australia.
Cockroaches
A cockroach can live up to a week without its head. Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and will run away from light. Cockroaches are tough- they can live up to three months without food and a month without water.
Rodents
Rats get fluids from foods and can survive a long time without drinking water. They are one of the smartest animals on the planet, like dolphins and chimpanzees.
Flies
Flies form one of the five most diverse insect orders, including about 150,000 described species in 150 families. It's estimated that there are 30,000 species of fly in Australia, of which only 6400 have been described.
Wasps & Hornets
Unlike those European wasp bad boys which can indeed be aggressive and inflict a painful sting, Australian native wasps rarely hurt people. They are often solitary creatures, unlikely to sting unless provoked, and some can't sting at all.
Mosquitoes
Only female mosquitoes bite and they are more active when the moon is full. They can breed in tiny amounts of water and they grow up fast.
